Pternopetalum tanakae (English name)

A small perennial herb of the Apiaceae family. It is found in areas from Hokkaido to Kyushu, the Korean peninsula, and China, and grows in shady marshes in deep mountains. The rhizome spreads horizontally, and the stem is single and unbranched, 10-30 cm tall. The basal leaves are long-stalked, 2-3 times trifoliate, and the leaflets are deeply incised. There are 1-2 stem leaves, forming a simple pinnate compound leaf, with linear, entire pinnae, and sometimes the same shape as the basal leaves. In May and June, a compound umbel (→ umbel) is borne at the terminal. There are no involucres, and the flower stalk is thin and has 10-20 stalks, with small umbels at the end of the stalks, each small and bearing 1-2 flowers in a raceme. The sepals are small, and the petals are ovate, flat, and white. The fruit is ovate and hairless. Although small and delicate overall, it is elegant and cute.
