Tschirnhausen

1651‐1708
German natural scientist and philosopher. Also known as Tschirnhaus. Born into an aristocratic family in Lusatia, northern Germany. Studied mathematics at the University of Leiden in the Netherlands. He also came into contact with Cartesian philosophy through Huygens. After military service, he devoted himself to academics from 1674 onwards. Around that time, he met the young doctor GH Schuller in Amsterdam, who introduced him to Spinoza and he began exchanging letters. In 1675, he formed an association with the young Leibniz in Paris. Leibniz's friendship with Tschirnhausen led him to take a deep interest in Spinoza's thought.

ドイツの自然科学者，哲学者。チルンハウスTschirnhausともいう。北ドイツのラウジッツの貴族の生れ。オランダのライデン大学で数学を学ぶ。またホイヘンスを通してデカルト哲学に接する。軍務の後，1674年以降学問に専念。そのころアムステルダムで若い医師G.H.シュラーと知り合い，彼の紹介でスピノザと文通を始め，75年にはパリで若きライプニッツと交わりを結ぶ。ライプニッツはチルンハウゼンとの交友が機縁となってスピノザの思想に深い関心を寄せる。
