1651‐1708 German natural scientist and philosopher. Also known as Tschirnhaus. Born into an aristocratic family in Lusatia, northern Germany. Studied mathematics at the University of Leiden in the Netherlands. He also came into contact with Cartesian philosophy through Huygens. After military service, he devoted himself to academics from 1674 onwards. Around that time, he met the young doctor GH Schuller in Amsterdam, who introduced him to Spinoza and he began exchanging letters. In 1675, he formed an association with the young Leibniz in Paris. Leibniz's friendship with Tschirnhausen led him to take a deep interest in Spinoza's thought. Source: Heibonsha World Encyclopedia, 2nd Edition Information |
