Died January 1519, Panama. Spanish explorer known as the discoverer of the Pacific Ocean. Set sail in 1501. Settled on the island of Hispaniola. In 1510, he traveled to Panama and founded the first stable settlement in the Americas, Santa María de la Antigua, in Darien. In the same year, he was appointed governor of Darien by King Ferdinand II (Catholic King). In September 1513, he crossed the Isthmus of Panama and discovered the Pacific Ocean from a hill near San Miguel Bay, becoming the first European to discover the Pacific Ocean. He was appointed governor of the South Seas, Panama, and Coiba by King Ferdinand, but was falsely accused of treason and executed.

A town in central Panama, southeast of the Panama Canal. A port town at the Pacific entrance of the canal, located on the east bank of the canal, facing Panama City to the east across the Ancon Hills. Founded in 1914, it was named after Balboa, the discoverer of the Pacific Ocean. From 1903 to 1979, it was under the jurisdiction of the United States and was the administrative center on the Pacific side of the canal zone. It has large port facilities, dry docks, ship and railroad car repair shops, warehouses, etc., and is connected to the opposite side of the canal by ferry. It is also known for its botanical gardens with over 400 species of orchids. Population 1952 (estimated 1980).

パナマ中部,パナマ運河南東部の町。運河の太平洋側出入口にある港町で,運河の東岸に位置し,アンコン丘陵をへだてて東のパナマ市に相対する。 1914年建設され,太平洋の発見者バルボアにちなんで命名された。 1903~79年アメリカ合衆国の管轄下にあり,運河地帯太平洋側の行政中心地であった。大規模な港湾施設,乾ドック,船舶や鉄道車両の修理工場,倉庫などがあり,運河の対岸とはフェリーで連絡。 400種以上のランを集めた植物園があることでも知られる。人口 1952 (1980推計) 。
