Heliodorus - Heliodorus (English spelling)

Date of birth and death unknown. Ancient Greek novelist from around the 3rd century. Also said to have been from Syria and lived in the 4th century. Author of the longest Greek love story, "The Ethiopian Story" (also known as "Theagenes and Callicleia"). It tells the story of an abandoned Ethiopian princess who falls in love with a young Greek man, and after wandering around the country facing various dangers, they end up united in marriage in her hometown. The story's clever development led to it being rediscovered during the Renaissance, influencing Cervantes, Tasso and others.

生没年不詳。3世紀ごろの古代ギリシアの小説家。シリア出身で4世紀の人ともいわれる。ギリシアの恋愛物語のなかではもっとも長い『エチオピア物語』（別名『テアゲネスとカリクレイア』）の作者。捨てられたエチオピアの王女がギリシアの青年と恋に落ち、さまざまの危険にあいながら各地を放浪したのち、故郷で結ばれるまでを描く。物語の展開が巧みで、ルネサンス期に再発見され、セルバンテスやタッソなどに影響を与えている。
