A temple in Busan Metropolitan City, South Korea. Its mountain name is Geumjeongsan. It is one of the 31 main temples of old Korea. It was founded in 662 (according to one theory, 835) during the Silla Dynasty by Gisang, the founder of Haedong Kegon. Along with Buseoksa Temple on Mount Taebaek in North Gyeongsang Province, it is one of the Ten Kegon Temples. It was burned down by Japanese troops in 1592, but was rebuilt in 1602 by Zen master Shunkan. It was burned down again, but was rebuilt by Myozen in the autumn of 1613. Even now, the temple is lined with magnificent buildings and sub-temples, centered around the main hall, Birujeon, and Ryugejeon. The Daiyuden Hall, with its three-bay, three-sided, single-story gabled roof, is extremely delicate and ornate in both structure and decoration, and exudes a sense of grandeur. The Buddhist altar in the inner sanctuary is also extremely majestic. Remains from the time of the temple's founding include a stone tower and stone lantern. There are 33 branch temples in various locations. [Michio Sato] Source: Shogakukan Encyclopedia Nipponica About Encyclopedia Nipponica Information | Legend |
