…In 1861, the antagonism between the Roman Catholic king's faction and the Greek Orthodox Church came to the surface, and, stimulated by the Italian revolution, a Greek revolution broke out, leading to the exile of King Oscar I (1862). In 1863, the Danish prince was appointed by the British government as the new king, Georgios I (reigned 1863-1913). The people accepted this on the condition that Britain cede the Ionian Islands (which had been British since 1815) to Greece. At the time of independence, Greek territory was limited to the mainland south of the line connecting the Bay of Arta and the Bay of Volos, and the Cyclades, and the issue of annexing the remaining Greek settlements was a concern of the government from the beginning. …
