Barnaul (English spelling) Барнаул/Barnaul

It is the administrative center of the Altai region in central Russia. It is located on the left bank of the Ob River, at the confluence with the Barnaulka River, a tributary of the Ob River. It has a population of 586,200 (1999). It is an important location for railroad and automobile traffic, and has a river port on the Ob River. It is one of the important industrial cities in Western Siberia, with industries such as machine manufacturing (thermal power boilers, diesel engines, metal cutting machines, presses, radios), machine repair (vehicles, steamships), chemicals (rubber, asbestos, chemical fibers), blended spinning and cotton industry complexes, food products (meat, dairy, oils and fats, beer), construction materials (reinforced concrete products, large panels for prefabricated houses), and leather and wool processing. The town developed after the Ural miner A. Demidov (1678-1745) built a metal smelting plant (copper, silver) here in the 1730s, and became a city in 1771. Between 1747 and 1917 it was the administrative center of the "Altai Okrug", a territory of the Russian Empire.
