Nobutoku Ito

Nobutoku Ito
Year of death: 15 November 1698 (13 October 1698)
Year of birth: Kan'ei 10 (1633)
A haiku poet of the early Edo period. His pen names were Nashikakien and Takeinuko. He was a wealthy merchant in Kyoto who learned haiku from Takase Baise. He later converted to the Danrin school and in 1677 he went to Edo, where he published Edo Sangin, a three-volume collection of 100 verses with Tosei (Matsuo Basho) and Shinsho (Yamaguchi Sodo). He continued to keep in touch with Basho after that. As the status of both men in the haiku world rose during the Jokyo and Genroku periods (1684-1704), their relationship became more estranged, but as a representative haiku poet in the Kyoto haiku world at the time, it can be said that his status in the world was comparable to that of Basho. <References> Ogino Kiyoshi, Genroku Meika Kushu, Ochi Mitoko, Shintoku Nenpu Ko (Kokugo Kokubun, January 1973 issue)
