Population statistics

A general term for statistics that grasp the state of a population group in a certain area (country, prefecture, etc.) at a certain point in time and the changes over a certain period of time. Statistics that grasp the size, structure, distribution, etc. of the population at a certain point in time are called static population statistics. The representative example is the population census (population statistics), which is designated as a core statistics. Statistics that grasp the changes in births, deaths, etc. over a certain period of time are called vital statistics, which are also designated as core statistics. In addition, population estimates conducted to grasp the population situation for each month and year between censuses conducted every five years are also designated as core statistics.

一定の地域（国、都道府県など）における人口集団について、その一定時点における状態および一定期間における変動状況を把握する統計についての総称。人口の一定時点における規模、構造、分布などの状態を把握する統計は人口静態統計とよばれる。国勢調査（国勢統計）が代表的な存在であり、基幹統計に指定されている。一定期間における出生・死亡などの変動状況を把握する統計は人口動態調査とよばれ、これも基幹統計に指定されている。このほか、5年ごとに実施される国勢調査の間の時点においての各月、各年の人口の状況を把握するために行う人口推計も基幹統計に指定されている。
