It means a nap in Spanish. Its origin is the Latin horamsextam, which means the sixth hour. This time, from noon to 3pm, is when the sun is strongest, and it was the time for midday prayer in medieval churches and monasteries. Since the lunch time for common people was before noon, the term came to mean a rest after lunch. In southern European countries and Latin American countries, offices and shops are often closed from around 1:30pm to 4:30pm, but this custom is decreasing in urban areas with modernization.

スペイン語で昼寝の意。語源は６番目の時刻を意味するラテン語のhoramsextam。正午から午後３時にあたるこの時刻はもっとも日差しの強い時間で，中世の教会，修道院では昼の祈りの時間であった。庶民の昼食時間は正午前に置かれていたため，ここから昼食後の休息を指すようになった。南欧諸国や中南米諸国では，午後１時半ごろから４時半ごろまで事務所や商店を閉めてしまうことが多いが，近代化とともにこの習慣は都市部では減少しつつある。
