Ionic atmosphere

...Debye et al. assumed that strong electrolytes are completely ionized in solution, and quantitatively examined how electrostatic Coulomb forces act between ions and how they affect the thermodynamic properties and migration speed of ions. When calculating the distribution of other ions around each ion according to this theory, it is found that each ion behaves as if it is surrounded by a group of ions with the opposite charge, known as an ionic atmosphere. According to this theory, for example, the permeability coefficient g , activity coefficient f , and molar conductivity Λ of a strong electrolyte in solution are given by the following equations:
