High-frequency induction furnace

High-frequency induction furnace
A furnace that heats with eddy currents generated by high-frequency electromagnetic induction. When a water-cooled copper tube is wound into a coil and a high-frequency current is passed through it, and a metal is placed in the center of the coil, eddy currents are generated inside the metal and it is heated. For metals, the current used is usually 0.15 to 400 kHz. For large-capacity melting, thyristor or generator types are mainly used, and for small furnaces, vacuum tube oscillator types are mainly used. For large capacity, the power supply unit is large, but since it is self-heating, the furnace body can be made small and it is easy to make it into a vacuum or any atmosphere. It is used for melting high-purity metals and high-grade alloys, and for zone melting. It is also widely used for surface hardening (→ Steel Surface Hardening Method), in which only the surface of the steel is rapidly heated and hardened, taking advantage of the rapid heating and skin effect caused by high frequency waves.
