A Korean scholar from the 7th century in Silla. Dates of birth and death unknown. Born to a noble family of Gaya descent, he was from Jungwon-gyō (Chungju). He set his sights on Confucianism and entered the government service, and was the first full-fledged Confucian scholar in Silla history, rivalling Seol Sang in prose. He deciphered a complex official letter from the Tang Dynasty during the reign of King Muyeol, wrote a reply to it, and gained the king's trust. In the midst of the complex international relations that existed during the reign of King Munmu, he skillfully handled diplomatic documents and contributed to the unification of the three kingdoms of Silla.
