...In newspapers and other fields, a few characters and readings other than the common kanji are used, but some common kanji are not used. At the same time as the publication of the common kanji list, the number of kanji usable in names was greatly increased to 166 (later adding 284) through a partial amendment to the Enforcement Regulations of the Family Registration Law, and a table of acceptable character styles was also presented, allowing the use of the correct characters for the 195 abbreviated characters in the common kanji list.
