Golgotha

Japanese: ゴルゴタ

A hill on the outskirts of Jerusalem. Its name means "skull." It is called Calvaria in Latin and Calvary in English. Christ was crucified here (Matthew 27, etc.). It is also said to have been the site of the Church of the Holy Sepulchre, the tomb of Adam, the ancestor of man. A small building built after the end of the Middle Ages with a crucifixion figure at the top and depictions of the Stations of the Cross is called a "Calvario."

エルサレム郊外の丘。名は〈されこうべ〉の意。ラテン語でカルウァリアCalvaria，英語でカルバリCalvary。ここでキリストが十字架にかけられた（《マタイによる福音書》27ほか）。人祖アダムの墓，聖墳墓教会があったとも。なお，中世末期以降作られた，磔刑(たっけい)図を頂点とし，〈十字架の道行〉の図像を配した小建築物を〈カルバリオ〉という。
