Originally the entrances to castles, and later to streets, gardens, residences, etc., it was a wooden gate with a swinging door and no roof. In the Edo period, the gates that served as guardhouses at the boundaries between samurai residences and town residences, as well as the entrances to theaters and other entertainment venues, were also called "kido." A "kido fee" was charged to pass through a kido, and this was sometimes abbreviated to "kido," and those that were exempt from this were called "kido gomen."
