A perennial plant of the Cyperaceae family, also called kobushi or kugu. It is found almost worldwide, and in Japan, it grows on sandy beaches, riverbanks, and sunny fields on the coasts of Honshu, Shikoku, and Kyushu, west of the Kanto region. A thin underground stem grows horizontally and produces a tuber at its tip. The culm stands upright from the tuber, 20-30 cm tall, and has several leaves growing in clusters at its base. The leaves are linear, somewhat hard, glossy, dark green, and the lower part forms a leaf sheath that envelops the culm. From summer to autumn, a flower stalk emerges between the leaves, and at the tip, one to three narrow linear involucre segments appear, from which several brown inflorescences emerge. The root hairs of the tuber are burned and removed, and the tuber is dried and called kobushi, which is used as a women's medicine for menstruation and spasmodic treatment.
