It has been firmly believed since the time of Hippocrates that urine provides a wealth of information about the health of the human body. Galen and Celsus also described standards for detecting illness and its prognosis from the properties of urine, and uroscopy, which continued from the Middle Ages until the 18th century, also based its diagnosis on the color, clearness or turbidity of urine, and sediment. Although the analytical method is significantly different from that of modern medical urine tests, the fundamental way of thinking about its meaning is the same as that of Hippocrates.
