A perennial herb of the Asteraceae family native to tropical Asia. In Japan, it is found in the Ryukyu Islands and southern Kyushu. It is often a weed in cultivated fields. The stem is erect and 40-150 cm long. The leaf shape is highly variable, with the leaf blades ranging from diamond-oval to oval or oblong. It flowers from October to November. The upper part of the stem branches, and many small flower heads are borne in corymbs. The flower heads are 7-8 cm long and all consist of bisexual tubular flowers. The involucre is bell-shaped and 4-5 mm long. Each flower head contains around 20 florets. The corolla is purple-red and 5-6 mm long.
