In 1385, he went to Dijon and joined the workshop of Jean de Marville, the court sculptor of Philip II, Duke of Burgundy. After his teacher's death in 1389, he took over the workshop as its chief sculptor. From 1385 to 1398, he worked on the decoration of the main entrance to the chapel of Chammourt Abbey, and from 1395 he began work on the masterpiece "Moses' Well" (Chammourt Abbey).
