A genus of the orchid family found in tropical Asia and New Guinea, with about 50 species. It is an evergreen perennial that usually grows on the forest floor or on rocks, but occasionally grows epiphytically. It has a short stem, several oblong, sometimes spotted, fleshy leaves that spread out to the left and right, and one or several flowers at the end of the flower stalk. The flower has wing-like lateral petals that extend to the left and right, a large, sac-like, swollen lip, a large upper sepal (dorsal sepal) and two lateral sepals that are fused together. The flower color is mainly white, yellow, or green, with brown or purple-red tinges, or spots. There are many hybrids, and it is one of the typical spring-flowering potted orchids. It prefers high humidity, but good ventilation is necessary for cultivation and management, and it should be repotted once every two years, and the minimum temperature in winter should be kept at 10 to 15 degrees Celsius. This group of orchids is known for its unique flower shape, and is classified in the subfamily Cypripedium along with Phragmipedium and Selenipedium, which are native to tropical America and have similar flower shapes, and Cypripedium, which is distributed in the temperate to subarctic zones of Eurasia and North America. Cypripedium is also found growing wild in Japan, and includes Cypripedium japonica and Cypripedium japonica. → Related article: Cypripedium Source : Heibonsha Encyclopedia About MyPedia Information |
