The title of a shamisen kumiuta. It is the first piece of a kumiuta, said to have been composed by Ishimura Kengyo or his disciple Torasawa Kengyo, or a collaboration between the two, and is the oldest artistic song in shamisen music. It is a combination of six short songs, and it is said that the first song is based on a Ryukyu folk song, but this is not certain. It starts with a monotonous rhythm that makes heavy use of a technique called morobachi, and is made up of a relatively simple musical pattern, but the tempo gradually speeds up and the techniques become more complex, resulting in a so-called jo-ha-kyu structure. The seven pieces following this one are called "Omote-gumi" or "Honte-gumi" or "Honkyoku," and are the oldest model pieces in shamisen honte (kumiuta).
