An old town in Nanjo County, occupying the mountainous region upstream of the Hino River in central Fukui Prefecture. Imajo, in the center, is a strategic point on the Hokuriku Kaido road between Kinome Pass and Tochinoki Pass, and was the location of the headquarters of both the Kaga and Echizen clans. From the opening of the Hokuriku Main Line until the completion of the Hokuriku Tunnel, it was also a railway town with a locomotive shed. It also engages in agriculture and forestry, producing rice, shiitake mushrooms, enoki mushrooms, and other crops. The textile industry is thriving. In January 2005, it merged with Nanjo Town and Kono Village in Nanjo County to become a town, forming Minami Echizen Town. 241.30 km2 . 4,953 people (2003). 福井県中部,日野川上流の山地を占める南条郡の旧町。中心の今庄は木ノ芽峠と栃ノ木峠にかかる北陸街道の要衝で,加賀・越前両藩の本陣があった。北陸本線開通から北陸トンネル完成までは機関庫をもつ鉄道の町でもあった。農林業も行い,米,シイタケ,エノキなどを産する。繊維工業が盛ん。2005年1月南条郡南条町,河野村と合併し町制,南越前町となる。241.30km2。4953人(2003)。
