Babirusa - Babirusa (English spelling)

A mammal of the order Artiodactyla and family Suidae. Also called deer hog. It lives alone or in small family groups in forest swamps and deep reed beds on the islands of Sulawesi, Buru and the Sula Islands. Its body length is 90-110 cm, its height 65-80 cm, and its weight 60-100 kg. Babirusa is characterized by its wrinkled, almost naked skin and the arched canine teeth that protrude from the upper cheeks of adult males. The length of the upper canine teeth reaches 31 cm in males. When young, it has brown hair, but as it grows, it loses it and the exposed skin appears gray to gray-brown. It feeds on leaves, buds and fruits, and may dig up larvae from rotting wood, but does not dig roots like common wild boars. It likes to bathe in mud and water. It has a gestation period of five months and gives birth to two young. The young are 15-20 centimetres long and plain in colour.

哺乳(ほにゅう)綱偶蹄(ぐうてい)目イノシシ科の動物。シカイノシシともいう。スラウェシ島、ブル島、スラ諸島などの森林内の沼地や、深い葦原(あしはら)などに、単独か小家族群ですむ。体長90～110センチメートル、体高65～80センチメートル、体重60～100キログラム。バビルサの特徴は、しわの多いほとんど裸出した皮膚と、成獣の雄の上頬(ほお)を突き抜けて弓状に曲がる犬歯である。上顎(じょうがく)犬歯の長さは、雄では31センチメートルに達する。幼時には褐色の毛を有するが、成長すると脱毛し、裸出した皮膚は灰色から灰褐色にみえる。木の葉、芽、果実などを食べ、朽ち木から幼虫を掘り出すこともあるが、一般のイノシシのように根を掘ろうとはしない。泥浴びや水浴を好む。妊娠期間5か月で、1産2子。子は体長15～20センチメートル、無地である。
