Suitengu Shrine

(1) Located in Seshimocho, Kurume City, Fukuoka Prefecture. Former prefectural shrine. Enshrining Ame-no-Minakanushi, Emperor Antoku, Kenreimon-in, and Taira no Tokiko. It is said that the name originated from Ise, who served Kenreimon-in in 1185, enshrining her spirit after the fall of the Taira clan. In 1650, Arima Tadayori, lord of Kurume Domain, donated the shrine grounds and buildings. It is the head shrine of Suitengu shrines throughout the country, and is highly revered for safe childbirth and protection from drowning. Annual festival held May 5-7. Summer festival (August 5, Kappa Festival), etc. (2) Located in Kakigaracho, Nihonbashi, Chuo Ward, Tokyo. Formerly an unranked shrine. A subsidiary shrine of (1). Originating from a branch shrine built by Arima Yoritoku in 1818 in the Edo domain residence. Built in its current location in 1872 when the Arima residence was relocated. The annual festival is held on May 5th. It is deeply revered in the entertainment world and is one of the three major festivals, along with the Togenuki Jizo in Sugamo and Kotohira Shrine in Toranomon.

（１）福岡県久留米市瀬下町に鎮座。旧県社。天御中主(あめのみなかぬし)神・安徳天皇・建礼門院・平時子をまつる。1185年建礼門院に仕えた伊勢が平家没落後，その霊をまつったのに由来するという。1650年久留米藩主有馬忠頼が社地・社殿を寄進した。全国各地の水天宮の総本社で，安産・水難よけの信仰が厚い。例祭５月５〜７日。夏大祭（８月５日，河童(かっぱ)祭）など。（２）東京都中央区日本橋蛎殻(かきがら)町に鎮座。旧無格社。（１）の摂社。1818年有馬頼徳が江戸藩邸内に建てた分社に由来。1872年有馬屋敷の移転とともに現在地に建てられた。例祭は５月５日。花柳界での信仰厚く，巣鴨のとげぬき地蔵，虎ノ門の金刀比羅(ことひら)宮と並んで，三大縁日の一つ。
