A general term for insects of the Diptera family Anthomyiidae. Closely related to the family Muscidae. Widely distributed worldwide, but best known in cool regions of the Northern Hemisphere. Common in mountainous areas at low latitudes, but rare in tropical and subtropical lowlands. Over 1,000 species are known worldwide, with around 190 known in Japan. Most appear from early spring to early summer, and are rare after midsummer. Many visit flowers. Not seen inside houses. 双翅目ハナバエ科Anthomyiidaeの昆虫の総称。イエバエ科に近縁。世界に広く分布するが,北半球の冷涼な地域からよく知られる。低緯度地方では山岳地に多く,熱帯や亜熱帯の低地ではとくに少ない。世界から1000種以上知られ,日本からは190種ほどが知られる。多くは早春~初夏に出現し,盛夏以降は少ない。花を訪れるものも多い。家屋内では見られない。体長3~11mm,多くは4~8mm,体型はやや細長く,太短い種類は少ない。
