Iosif Volotskii

Around 1439 - 1515
A Russian monk and religious thinker. His real name was Ivan Sanin. At the age of 20, he was tonsured at the Borovsky Monastery near Moscow. In 1479, he founded the Joseph-Vorokolamsky Monastery in the Volokolamsky region, and gradually attracted many disciples. Around this time, he began to crack down on heresy that had spread to Novgorod and Moscow, but he also emphasized the social responsibility of monasteries and argued in favor of their land ownership. His position was criticized by non-owners such as Nil Solsky and Basian Patrikeyev, but he became the majority in the Russian Church and formed the Josephite sect.

ロシアの修道士，宗教思想家。俗名イワン･サーニンIvan Sanin。20歳のころモスクワに近いボロフスキー修道院で剃髪をうける。1479年ボロコラムスキー地方にみずからヨシフォ･ボロコラムスキー修道院を建て，しだいに多くの弟子を集めるようになる。このころからノブゴロドやモスクワに広がった異端を摘発する一方，修道院の社会的責務を重視してその土地所有を肯定する論陣をはる。その立場はニル･ソルスキー，バシアン･パトリケーエフら非保有派の批判をうけるが，ロシア教会内では多数派となり，ヨシフ派を形成した。
