...The stomach always contains diatom shells, planktonic algae cells, and fragments of copepods, and it seems that they feed on such things. The largest of this species is the large-tailed sea eagle, Phronima sedentaria (illustration), which is 6-35 mm long. Females are known to have the strange habit of entering the gelatinous burrows of planktonic protochordata such as salps, sea urchins, and ascidians, eating the surrounding tissue, and building a barrel-shaped dwelling in which they live and raise their larvae. The closely related Phronima stebbingi, P. stebbingi , is small, with a body length of 3-9 mm, and is somewhat more widely distributed, even in cold waters.
