The term atheism has often been overused, but it should not be confused with pantheism, deism, agnosticism, etc. Historically, atheism has often been linked to materialism. The main atheists in ancient times were the ideas of Democritus, Epicurus, and Lucretius, who stood for atomistic materialism. Since the Renaissance, various atheistic tendencies have emerged with the revival of ancient thought, but it was among French materialists in the mid-18th century that atheism took its classical form and openly declared war on religion. ...
