Kanaoka

The title of a kyogen piece. Female kyogen. A piece exclusive to the Izumi school. When his wife hears that the painter Kanaoka has gone mad and is wandering the outskirts of Kyoto, she waits for him in the grounds of Kiyomizu. Kanaoka (shite) appears insane, singing "...Love, love, don't let my love become hollow." When his wife asks him why he has gone mad, he says that he cannot forget a beautiful maid he recently fell in love with at the palace. Kanaoka advises her to paint his face as if it were the person she loves, using his favorite paintbrush, since women are beautiful because of their makeup. Kanaoka also gets into the mood and paints his wife's face while dancing, but he finally pushes her down, singing "...She resembles the face of the one I love, but she is no different from a fox in disguise," and is cornered. Kose Kanaoka was a famous court painter in the early Heian period. The frenzied chanting is difficult and requires dignity, making this an extremely challenging piece. The influence of this piece can be seen in the Kabuki dance "Yasuna."

狂言の曲名。女狂言。和泉(いずみ)流だけの曲。絵師の金岡が物狂(ものぐる)いとなり、京都郊外をさまよっていると聞き、妻が清水(きよみず)の境内で待っていると、「……恋や恋、われ中空(なかぞら)になすな恋」と謡いながら、金岡（シテ）が正気を失った態で現れる。妻が狂気したわけを尋ねると、先ごろ御殿で見そめた美しい女中が忘れられないためだというので、女の美しいのは化粧のせいであるから得意の絵筆で思い人のように自分の顔を絵取るように勧める。金岡もその気になって舞いながら妻の顔に彩色するが、ついに「……恋しき人の顔には似いで、狐(きつね)の化けたに異ならず」と謡って妻を突き倒し、追い込まれる。巨勢金岡(こせのかなおか)は平安前期の高名な宮廷画家。狂乱の謡がむずかしく、品位も必要で至難の曲。歌舞伎(かぶき)舞踊『保名(やすな)』には本曲の影響が認められる。
