Mountains are not necessarily defined as being high in altitude, but as a combination of the relative height and the slopes surrounding the summit. Although there are classifications based on altitude alone, such as high mountains (over 3000m), medium mountains (1000-2000m), and low mountains (below 1000m), there are also classifications based on the amount of relief, as indicated by the difference in elevation between the main ridges and the associated main valleys, such as high relief mountains (over 1800m), medium relief mountains (900-1800m), low relief mountains (600-900m), and hills (150-600m) (according to American geographer Trewartha). Since this classification is for mountainous areas around the world, it would be easier to apply it to mountainous areas in Japan if the above classification criteria were lowered to high relief (over 1000m), medium relief (500-1000m), low relief (150-500m), and hilly area (50-150m). *Some of the terminology that refers to "hilly areas" is listed below.
