Also written as kato-mado. It refers to a Chinese-style pointed arch window that was brought over from China when Zen architecture was introduced during the Kamakura period, but was later adopted into sukiya architecture, and elaborate windows such as those in the shape of a koto bridge or with an arc-shaped top were made. Today, it generally refers to any opening with a curved top, and can also refer to any opening that is not rectangular and simply has rounded corners. 火頭窓とも書く。鎌倉時代に中国から禅宗建築が導入された際にもたらされた中国系の尖頭アーチ型の窓をさしたが,のちに数寄屋建築に取入れられて,琴柱の形をしたもの,頂部が円弧のものなど趣向を凝らしたものが作られた。現在では頂部が曲線状態の開口部一般をさし,さらには,隅部を落しただけの矩形ではない開口部一般をさすことがある。また茶室の茶道口の上部を曲線にとったものを火灯と呼ぶ。
