...The "Soka no Gaku" was a form of mourning for the deceased. The puppet plays, called "Kai-shi" (puppets), were no longer used for funerals at the end of the Han Dynasty (2nd century), and were used for banquets instead of for warding off plagues. As the meaning of warding off plague disappeared, it took on the character of humorous entertainment. Puppet singing and dancing had been popular in the imperial court since the Northern and Southern Dynasties, but it was not until the Song Dynasty (10th century) that it was perfected as a performing art and combined with theater. ...
