… In addition to the aforementioned Baedeker, which is still in existence as a series of travel guides that cover every region of the world and are highly regarded internationally, the UK also publishes the Blue Guide (first published in 1918), which is renowned for its historical and literary commentary and was written by James Fullarton Muirhead (1853-1934), who had previously worked on the English edition of Baedeker. In France, the Guide Bleu by Louis Christophe François Hachette (1800-64), the Guide Michelin by André Michelin (1853-1931), the inventor of the pneumatic tire, and the Guide to N'Ajer by Louis Nagel (1908- ), are well known. In the United States, there is Fodor (first published in 1936) by Eugene Fodor (1905-), which is characterized by contributions from experts and annual revisions, and the American Guide Series, a travel guide for the United States, which was completed between 1935 and 1943 as a job relief project for writers after the Great Depression.
