Japanese: バッタ(蝗) - バッタ（英語表記）grasshopper

A general term for insects belonging to the superfamily Acridoidea in the order Orthoptera. Approximately 5,000 species from eight families are known from around the world. There are particularly many species in tropical and subtropical regions, and about 50 species from two families are found in Japan. They generally live mainly in grasslands and often have body colors that match the colors of their habitat, but they may hide subtle colors in their hind wings. Their heads are large and shaped like eggs, but some species, such as the long-horned grasshopper, have cone-shaped heads. Their compound eyes are relatively large, clearly indicating their diurnal nature, which allows them to live by their eyes.

直翅目バッタ上科Acridoideaに属する昆虫の総称。世界から8科約5000種が知られる。とくに熱帯･亜熱帯地方は種類が豊富で，日本にはこのうち2科約50種が分布している。　一般に草原をおもなすみ場所とし，生息環境の色彩に合わせた体色をもつことが多いが，後翅にはでな色彩を隠しもっていることもある。頭部は卵を立てた形で大きいが，ときにショウリョウバッタのように円錐形の頭部となる種もある。複眼は相対的に大きく，眼にたよって生活する昼行性の性質をよく示している。
