Born: February 16, 1866, Königsberg [Died] June 26, 1958. Bremen, German geographer and topographer. Graduated from the University of Berlin in 1886, he became a professor at the University of Breslau in 1905, and served as director of the Institute for Colonial Studies at the University of Hamburg from 1908 to 1935. He discussed landscapes and advocated an organization and research methodology that was based on the "landscape part" as the smallest geographical individual, and gradually advanced to larger regions. He was also known as a researcher of South Africa. He received the Ritter Prize in 1953, and an honorary doctorate from the University of Hamburg in 1956. His major works include Die Grundlagen der Landschaftskunde (Foundations of Landscape Science) (3 volumes, 1919-20) and Vergleichende Landshaftskunde (Comparative Landscape Science) (4 volumes, 21-30).
