Born: February 16, 1866, Königsberg
[Died] June 26, 1958. Bremen, German geographer and topographer. Graduated from the University of Berlin in 1886, he became a professor at the University of Breslau in 1905, and served as director of the Institute for Colonial Studies at the University of Hamburg from 1908 to 1935. He discussed landscapes and advocated an organization and research methodology that was based on the "landscape part" as the smallest geographical individual, and gradually advanced to larger regions. He was also known as a researcher of South Africa. He received the Ritter Prize in 1953, and an honorary doctorate from the University of Hamburg in 1956. His major works include Die Grundlagen der Landschaftskunde (Foundations of Landscape Science) (3 volumes, 1919-20) and Vergleichende Landshaftskunde (Comparative Landscape Science) (4 volumes, 21-30).

ドイツの地理学者，地形学者。 1886年ベルリン大学卒業，1905年ブレスラウ大学教授となり，08～35年ハンブルク大学植民地研究所主宰となった。景観を論じ，最小の地理的個体としての「景観部分」を基礎にして，次第に大地域に進む組織と研究法を主張した。南アフリカの研究家としても知られる。 53年リッター賞を受賞。 56年ハンブルク大学名誉博士。主著に『景観学の基礎』 Die Grundlagen der Landschaftskunde (3巻，1919～20) と『比較景観学』 Vergleichende Landshaftskunde (4巻，21～30) がある。
