A general term for alloys that ignite when subjected to friction or impact. Lighter flue crystals are of this type, and are also used in photo flashes and fireworks. Rare earth element-based alloys include mischmetal (main component cerium) with about 30% iron, nickel, or copper, and alloys of lanthanum with magnesium, lead, tin, etc. Zinc-tin alloys and vanadium-iron alloys are also sometimes used as ignition alloys.
