White Sea - Beloe More

It is an inland sea in the northern part of European Russia, a part of the Barents Sea in the Arctic Ocean. It extends deep southwestward from the part between the Kola Peninsula and the Kanin Peninsula in the northern part of the Russian Federation. It includes the Kandalaksha Bay, the Onega Bay, the Dvina Bay, and the Mezeni Bay. Its English name is the White Sea. Its area is about 90,000 square kilometers. The average depth is 67 meters, but the Kandalaksha Bay is somewhat deeper, reaching a depth of 350 meters. Except for the central part, the bay freezes over from October to November, and drift ice exists from May to June. Fishing for herring, cod, salmon, etc., and seal hunting are actively carried out. There are ports in Kandalaksha at the base of the Kola Peninsula, Belomorsk at the northern end of the White Sea-Baltic Canal, Onega at the mouth of the Onega River, Arkhangelsk at the mouth of the Northern Dvina River, and Mezeni at the mouth of the Mezeni River, and they serve as bases for transporting goods to the Arctic Ocean coast. It was Russia's most important bay until the early 18th century when Russia gained access to the Baltic Sea.

北極海の一部バレンツ海の属海で、ヨーロッパ・ロシアの北部の内海。ロシア連邦北部のコラ半島とカニン半島に挟まれる部分から、南西方向に奥深く湾入している。カンダラクシャ湾、オネガ湾、ドビナ湾、メーゼニ湾などを含む。英語名White Sea。面積約9万平方キロメートル。平均水深は67メートルであるが、カンダラクシャ湾はやや深く、深度350メートルに達する。中央部を除き、10～11月に結氷し、5～6月まで流氷がある。ニシン、タラ、サケなどを対象とした漁業、アザラシ猟などが盛んに行われる。コラ半島基部のカンダラクシャや、白海バルト海運河の北端にあたるベロモルスク、オネガ川河口のオネガ、北ドビナ川河口のアルハンゲリスク、メーゼニ川河口のメーゼニなどに港があり、北極海沿岸への物資輸送の基地となっている。18世紀初めにロシアがバルト海への出口を得るまでは、ロシア随一の海湾として重要であった。
