He published avant-garde novels one after another, which could be considered an extension of his long poems, and performed the remarkable feat of striking a new style with each work. His long novels, such as “Gold” (1925), which is said to have revolutionized the style of French novels, “Morabazine” (1926), and “The Confessions of Dan Yacq” (1929), are already highly regarded as classics of 20th century literature. In 1943, he published the first volume of a unique four-volume series of memoirs, “The Man Struck by Lightning,” which was tentatively completed in 1949 with “A Subdivision in the Sky.” …
