A marine fish of the family Scyllidae in the order Carcharhinidae. Its name comes from the cloud-like patterns on its body that resemble the stripes of a tiger. In English, sharks in this family are collectively called cat sharks, which also refer to the pattern. It is distributed throughout Japan, the Korean peninsula, and China, with its southern limit being the Philippines and its northern limit being Hokkaido. Meanwhile, the closely related long-tailed catshark, Halaerulus buergeri , is found in large numbers in the central and southern parts of Japan, especially in Kyushu. Catsharks are strongly coastal, living on the seafloor at depths of less than 100m. In addition to the patterns on their bodies, they are characterized by the presence of labial folds around their mouths. Source: Heibonsha World Encyclopedia, 2nd Edition Information |
