?-1805 A Spanish governor (in office 1778-87) who brought about groundbreaking economic development in the Philippines in the second half of the 18th century. He was a naval officer from Granada. Manila, the capital of the Spanish colony of the Philippines, was occupied by Britain from 1762-64 as a result of pressure from the Seven Years' War in Europe, which made the Spanish government keenly aware of the military and economic weakness of its rule over the Philippines. Various reforms were subsequently considered, but the economic policies implemented by Governor Basco were the most successful. In 1782, he implemented a system of forced tobacco cultivation and monopoly (which continued until 1881). Source: Heibonsha World Encyclopedia, 2nd Edition Information |
