A long epic poem about the passion of Jesus Christ, chanted in the Philippines during Lent. It is written in five lines of eight syllables. The custom of chanting the Passion dates back to the early 18th century, but the version currently chanted was compiled by Father Mariano Pilapil in 1814 and is called the Pilapil version of the Passion. The original text was in Tagalog and was later translated into Philippine languages. It is said that the Philippines is the only country that chants the Passion for seven or eight days during Lent, especially during the final Holy Week.
