This is a court official book from the mid-Heian period. Shichu is the Chinese name for Kurodo (a priest), and it records matters related to the duties of the Kurodo. There is a theory that it was written by Tachibana Hiroaki, but this is incorrect. Judging from the era names and personal names recorded in the text, it is believed to have been written after the second half of the 11th century. It consists of 10 volumes, and describes in detail everything related to Kurodo and the Kurodo Office, starting with etiquette for newly appointed Kurodo, and going on to the daily work of Kurodo, regular and special miscellaneous matters, duties, etiquette, and personnel affairs of the Kurodo staff in various ceremonies. One of the features of this book is that it lists various theories on each topic under headings such as "Shiki" (Ceremony), "Ie" (Family), "Kou" (Hearing), "Kusa" (Grass), and "Kusanaga" (Grass).
