Sailfish - Bashokajiki (English spelling) sailfish

A marine fish belonging to the order Perciformes and family Marlinidae of the class Osteichthyes. It is medium-sized among billfish, reaching a body length of over 2 meters and a weight of 60 kilograms. It is characterized by a large, well-developed dorsal fin, from which its English name comes. It is distributed coastally, migrating in the tropical and subtropical coastal waters of the Indian and Pacific Oceans. In summer, it travels along the coast of Japan on the Kuroshio Current and Tsushima Warm Current, where it is caught with fixed nets and trolls. Sport fishing is popular off the coasts of the United States and Mexico.

硬骨魚綱スズキ目マカジキ科に属する海水魚。カジキ類中では中形で、体長2メートル以上、体重60キログラムに達する。発達した大きな背びれが特徴で、英名もこれに由来する。分布は、沿岸性でインド洋や太平洋の熱帯、亜熱帯の沿岸海域を回遊する。夏には黒潮や対馬(つしま)暖流にのって日本沿岸にも来遊し、定置網や突ん棒(つきんぼう)で漁獲される。アメリカやメキシコ沿岸ではスポーツ・フィッシングが盛んである。
