...There is also no consensus as to whether this concept is a description of phenomena or a process. The term was first coined by R. Goldschmidt (1940). He believed that the evolutionary theory of the time, based on experimental genetics and population genetics, could only deal with changes in the genetic composition of species, and could not explain the birth of discontinuity between species (the formation of new species) that actually exists.
