A city in the northeastern part of Wakayama Prefecture. It was incorporated as a city in 1955. The central city faces the Kinokawa River and developed as a river port and a transportation hub at the intersection of the Yamato and Koya highways. Bamboo products such as fishing rods and walking sticks are a specialty of the city, and they account for about 90% of the national market share.
