A city in the northeastern part of Wakayama Prefecture. It was incorporated as a city in 1955. The central city faces the Kinokawa River and developed as a river port and a transportation hub at the intersection of the Yamato and Koya highways. It is still a transportation hub where the Wakayama Line and the Nankai Koya Line intersect. There are tobacco factories and concrete factories, and in the rural areas, fruit cultivation such as persimmons, mandarin oranges, grapes, and pears, and poultry farming are thriving. Bamboo products such as fishing rods and walking sticks are a specialty of the city, and they account for about 90% of the national market share. Due to its good transportation access, suburban residential areas are developing and it is a satellite city of Osaka. In March 2006, Koyaguchi Town in Ito District was incorporated. 130.55 km2 .
