A city in the eastern part of the Shimabara Peninsula in Nagasaki Prefecture. It was incorporated as a city in 1940. The central city area overlooking Shimabara Bay developed as a castle town and port town of the Matsudaira clan, with a fief of 70,000 koku. Small industries such as dyeing, which used the abundant spring water, flourished here since ancient times, but now food processing and sake brewing are thriving. It is the tourist center of Unzen-Amakusa National Park, and is served by the Shimabara Railway, which has regular ferry services to Kumamoto City and Omuta City. There are historical sites such as castle ruins, samurai residences, and Christian ruins, and off the coast of the port is the scenic Tsukumo Island. In November 1990, Mount Fugen, the central crater of Mount Unzen, erupted, and the following year a pyroclastic flow caused 43 deaths and missing persons. In January 2006, Ariake Town in Minamitakaki District was incorporated. 82.97 ^km2 . Population 47,455 (2010).

長崎県島原半島東部の市。1940年市制。島原湾に臨む中心市街は松平氏７万石の城下町，港町として発展。古くから豊富な湧(ゆう)水を利用する染色などの小工業が興ったが，現在は食品加工，酒造が盛ん。雲仙天草国立公園の観光中心地で，島原鉄道が通じ，熊本市，大牟田市へ定期航路がある。城跡，武家屋敷，キリシタン遺跡などの史跡，港の沖には景勝の地，九十九(つくも)島がある。1990年11月，雲仙岳中央火口丘の普賢岳が噴火し，翌年には火砕流で死者，行方不明者43人を出した。2006年１月南高来郡有明町を編入。82.97km²。４万7455人（2010）。
