Until the early period of the French Revolution, he was active in the legal and political worlds, serving as a member of the National Assembly and mayor of his hometown. However, during the Reign of Terror, he was forced to go into exile and traveled to Germany, Switzerland, and the United States, working in various jobs such as apprentice chef, French teacher, and violinist, making use of his side skills. After returning to France, he worked as a caterer in the General Staff of the Republic in Germany, then returned to the legal world and spent the rest of his life as a Supreme Court judge for 25 years. During that time, he wrote legal books and published Physiologie du goût (The Physiology of Taste) the year before his death. Although he was a refined man, he remained single throughout his life, but in contrast to the eccentric Grimaud de la Reynière, he was a man of good sense and culture, frequenting literary salons and observing various people with a moralist's eye. …
