American historian. Born in Boston. Studied law at Harvard University. In 1847 he wrote "The Oregon Trail," a record of his own exploration. He advocated positivist historical research, and from 1848 to 1851 he wrote "Pontiac's Conspiracy," which focused on Indian rebellions. He also spent his life researching the struggle for dominance of the North American continent between Britain and France during the colonial period, publishing works such as "The French Pioneers in the New World" (1865), "La Salle and the Discovery of the West" (1879), and "Montcalm and Wolfe" (1884), but he could not escape his patriotic view of history that favored white supremacy.
