Vāgbhaṭa (English spelling)

Japanese: バーグバタ（英語表記）Vāgbhaṭa

A 7th-century Indian physician. Dates of birth and death unknown. He is considered one of the "Three Great Doctors" of classical Indian medicine, along with Charaka and Sushruta, but he is a much more historically accurate figure than the other two, and is probably the physician mentioned by Gijo (635-715) in the Nankai Kigi Naippoden. However, there remain two very similar works, the Aṣṭāṅga-saṃgraha and the Aṣṭāṅga-hṛdayasaṃhitā, and some scholars suggest that there were two Bhagbhatas.

7世紀ころのインドの医学者。生没年不詳。チャラカ，スシュルタと並んでインド古典医学の〈三医聖〉の一人とされるが，他の2人に比べてはるかに歴史的実在性の明らかな人物であり，おそらくは義浄(635‐715)が《南海寄帰内法伝》で言及している医者であろう。ただし，《アシュターンガ･サングラハAṣṭāṅga‐saṃgraha》と《アシュターンガ･フリダヤサンヒターAṣṭāṅga‐hṛdayasaṃhitā》というよく似た2種の著作が残っており，バーグバタ2人説を唱える学者もある。
